Underage Drinking

In 2012, Hudson County Middle School Students had the 2nd highest Annual use of Alcohol and the 3rd highest past 30 day use of Alcohol (NJ Middle School Risk and Protective Factor Survey). Hudson County Coalition for a Drug-Free Community is committed to reducing youth substance abuse and educating our community through these active projects:

Prescription Drug Abuse

There is a high prevalence of prescription drug abuse among middle and high school students in Hudson County. In 2012 and 2014, Hudson County Coalition for a Drug-Free Community administered their student survey to over 4,000 8th, 10th and 12th grade students in Hudson County. In 2014, 16% of Hudson County students who participated reported using prescription drugs without a doctor’s prescription in the past 30 days. Hudson County Coalition for a Drug-Free Community is committed to reducing youth substance abuse and educating our community through these active projects:

  • Offer Pharmacies table tents with Rx Disposal locales
  • Modifying Senior Curriculum
  • Partner with Pharmaceutical company to provide Law Enforcement with training on lawful prescribing
  • Media Campaigns
  • New Jersey Prescription Monitoring Program letter was mailed out to doctors within Hudson County
  • Participation and advocacy of US Surgeon General’s Turn the Tide Rx Campaign (turnthetiderx.org)

The Hudson County Coalition implements cutting edge prevention initiatives and collaborates with area partners to create community-level change. Anyone who has a desire and a passion to address underage drinking and prescription drug abuse is welcome to join. The Coalition looks forward to expanding its efforts and has great expectations for the years to come. We hope that by setting effective initiatives, we will achieve significant outcomes to reduce substance abuse and ultimately foster a safer, healthier Hudson County.new6

Hudson County Survey Results

Substance Abuse Prevention has come a long way from simply providing information to kids about the dangers of substance abuse. Current prevention practices range from holistic “strength-based” direct-service prevention program to community advocacy for environmental system changes.
